Fr Des was originally from Taranaki and spent his priestly ministry in the wider Wellington area with lengthy spells in Waiwhetu, Kilbirnie, Levin and Stokes Valley parishes.
Fr Des’ 50th anniversary as an ordained priest in 2012 was a big celebration with the theme of ‘Thank you Fr Des for 50 Years”. It began with special Mass which Fr Des concelebrated with Fr Lou Leuthard, Fr Frank Whitaker and Fr Chris Penders. Over 300 people attended including members of his family, friends from other parishes and local parishioners.
We recognise the dedication and workload demonstrated by Fr Des’ 50+ years of continuous service in bringing God to his people and taking his people to God, and the thoughtfulness with which he bridged the reality of peoples’ lives with their spiritual potential.
His life reflected the ministry he was called to and the values he has taught, as well as the care and insight and foresight he has applied to the exercise of his ministry and to the well-being of his parishioners.
Fr Des retired in 2015.
